Arizona had a little more to offer us - a better game, better weather, and better views. We got a hotel close to downtown but they were doing construction so it was hard to get to. But we got upgraded to the "penthouse" suite - in a best western it's not all that much of a penthouse. But we did get a private elevator, a balcony, and a king size bed! We headed down to the game after a relaxing nap in the king size bed - the crowd at the game was a lot of fun. There was a huge bar outside with a huge party going on. They were playing the Boston Red Sox and you know those fans are rowdy - they kept singing Sweet Caroline. I'm not sure why, but it was fun. We had great seats - behind home plate, high enough to see the entire field (i.e. close to the cheap seats) and they left the cover open. AZ can close their dome when it gets really hot but lucky for us even though it was hot outside it wasn't hot in the stadium. The Diamondbacks lost - 3-4 - which means the Red Sox fans got even rowdier! Getting out of the stadium was crazy - only escalators... they really need the ramps like at Angel's Stadium!
The next day we drove down the Apache Trail east of Phoenix. It was really hot - over 100 degrees - but our car kept us cool. The trail actually goes into a canyon. The whole trail was really beautiful - 2 lakes, windswept canyon walls, desert landscape, narrow windy roads. We didn't get all the way to Canyon Lake but we did have a stop over in Tortilla Flat. TF is a town of 6 people and 2 buildings. One of them is the old school house, the other a store and a restaraunt. We bought a shot glass, post cards, ice cream, and prickly pear candy from the store - then posted a dollar up on the wall - an old tradition in the area.
Then we moved on to the restaraunt so Eric could have their "killer chili" which turns out wasn't so killer. I had fun in the bathrooms where the stall doors were painted so that if you stood behind them you looked like a saloon dancing lady. And, the barstools were fun too - saddles!

We are definitely ready for next weekend though - finally a weekend at home!
