Here we are - Kayla is now 1 week and 2 days old. We've been home for almost 7 days and it's been nothing short of fantastic. Eric is fully rested but I'm a little less so what with 2am feedings and all but I nap at least once during the day with her so it's not too bad. She's been a lot busier than we expected - 4 doctors visits and a trip to Target. 3 of those doctors visits were for me because I got an infection at my incision and had to be treated for that - the 4th was her first pediatric appointment and boy are we glad those don't happen often because we waited for 2 hours to see the dr. At least she was asleep so it wasn't too bad.
So - lessons learned this first week...
...Keep a diaper on during bath time - you never know what could happen.
...When she wants to cry there's no stopping her until she gets whatever it is she wants. She was so quiet the first couple days but she's found her lungs.
...Babies don't do a whole lot - reserve excitement for a couple weeks/months.
...Sometimes she likes to be swaddled, sometimes not - it's a guessing game. But when she likes it she's our burrito baby.
...Wait for the 2nd poop. She tends to poop twice after eating and we can never wait for the 2nd one - who wants to leave their baby sitting in poop? So we go through a lot of diapers! We know it's going to happen but Eric just can't help himself - he has to change her.
...Hiccups are just as frustrating for them as they are for us - poor girl hiccups all the time!
...Headband ribbons don't quite work yet - unless we want to travel back to the 80s.
..."Eyes-open" time is rare - she spends the majority of the day with them closed whether she's awake or not.
More about Kayla
- She raises one arm at a time above her head to stretch.
- She snorts when she eats (but I guess that's normal b/c they don't breathe through their mouths yet).
- She opens her right eye before her left earning her another nickname - cyclops baby.
- She eats with her hands folded across her chest.
A few of our favorite things
The car seat! Best invention in the world - awake to asleep in 2.3 seconds.
The swing! Doesn't necessarily put her to sleep but definitely calms her down.
Pampers Newborn diapers - they have this yellow line on the outside of them that turns blue when she pees so you can tell without opening up the diaper and guessing if there's something in there.
The swaddle - sometimes. It definitely has it's place but is hard to master.
Grandmas! It would have been a much more difficult 1st week if a grandma wasn't here. She made dinner for us every night and did laundry and helped with Kayla when we needed to do something besides hold her. :-) I know - who would want to do anything other than hold their precious daughter - but there are times.
Alright - she's down there fussing so I best be off.
Wow - this is a great way to "scrapbook"! I'm impressed although I'm not able to picture the one about keeping the diaper on while bathing her. Love ya!

HAHA...good times. She is a cutie.
ReplyDeleteWe're still waiting on Loudon. Carla was due yesterday but he is refusing to leave. The doc is serving an eviction notice on Saturday, the 14th. We hope he comes before then since our parents will be flying in that day. Keep you fingers crossed.
